Using this tool for Strategy and Planning

Making intentional choices rooted in values and evidence

By understanding the connections between specific outputs, activities, and their associated outcomes and impacts, we can make more informed and strategic decisions about which initiatives to prioritise and invest in - especially when resources are limited or difficult choices need to be made.

The Theory of Change (ToC) allows us to visualise the ripple effects of different dimensions of our model, helping us ensure that our decisions stay grounded in our mission: enabling care and support to flourish in abundance, shaped by the people giving and receiving it.

Commons Activities & Outputs

💚 The value of deep community connection

Activities that support the development of the commons—like forming volunteer circles, building partnerships with anchor organisations, or supporting time-banking systems—are often time- and resource-intensive. Their benefits might not be immediately obvious to conventional care providers.

What’s more, traditional evaluation methods don’t always capture the full value of these activities, which often lead to long-term, communal, and hard-to-measure forms of care wealth.

🧡 Why team-based care matters

Mainstream home care rarely builds teams around the person receiving support—let alone teams that integrate friends, family, neighbours, and paid carers, sharing responsibility and making decisions together.

This team-building approach is foundational to Equal Care’s model, but it might look unusual or resource-heavy to funders or partners unfamiliar with its benefits.

💙 Care coordination through digital tools

The technology platform behind Equal Care plays a quiet but essential role in enabling self-managed teams, mutual matches, and better communication between formal and informal care givers. Its functions - from displaying care data to facilitating peer support - make the cooperative model easier to navigate for everyone involved.

Investing in digital infrastructure is often under-prioritised in care, but our ToC shows how these investments directly support people to feel safer, more in control, and more connected.

Circles help Equal Care operate in a genuinely place-based way. They form the backbone of democratic decision-making, team support, and service design in each area. Circles connect people to one another, build trusted networks, and ensure local voices shape how care is delivered.

This localised structure is not typical of care organisations, but our ToC helps surface how this layer of governance contributes to better care, better relationships, and stronger communities.

Why this matters

Using this Theory of Change framework helps us demonstrate and articulate the value of investing in unconventional, often under-recognised features of our model. It gives us a way to justify our decisions -whether to funders, local authorities, or our members - and to stay true to our cooperative principles while measuring what matters.
